Doesn’t time fly? It’s time again for the Pembroke Summer League. Well, leagues, as there are separate foil and épée leagues on Tuesdays and Thursdays respectively.
For those who have not taken part before the summer leagues are run over seven weeks in July and August. They are held in our regular fencing venue, St. Conlenth’s School, Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
The first 5 weeks are the poule matches. During these matches everyone is encouraged to fence as many people as possible and all pionts scored are given league pionts. A league piont is also awarded for every match fenced. A handicap system is used to encourage fencers of different abilities to fence each other. The handicap is calculated using the latest available national rankings. Those unranked fencers start with a zero handicap and the ranked fencers with have a minus number of points depending on their results in competitions over the last season.
A league table is produced from the poules and the direct elimination rounds are held over the final two weeks. Not everyone can make it every week but all points will still add up. If you can make at least two weeks fencing you are automatically entered into the DE section of the Summer league which is run over the last two weeks.
While medals are given to the top 4 in the league the top six men and women win a coveted Pembroke Summer League t-shirt. However, the important thing is that it is good clean fun and everyone gets in lots of fencing.
The cost for league is €30 per weapon to non-members of Pembroke and, of course, free for members.
