”]Great spread in the Irish Times on Natalya Coyle pentathlete and one of our Olympic hopefuls, who trains occassionaly at our club. I love the idea of the modern pentathalon; running, swimming, riding, fencing and shooting. Obviously, I fence, and I do run a bit. In my schooldays I was a handy fencer and I’ve also done a bit of shooting. The only real problem here is that I’m a little bit afraid of horses. I don’t like animals that are bigger than me and I’ve never actually ridden one. I did once own a share in a racehorse but that’s a different story. The real issue is time, I find it hard to keep up with fencing without the other four too. Natalya’s training regime does put in perspective just how lax this recreational fencer is!
I have to say in passing that the Modern Pentathalon Association of Ireland is much better at organising publicity than the Irish Fencing Federation.
